A root canal filling is needed when the nerve or multiple nerves in the root of the tooth become infected.
This causes the tooth to die and infection to ensue. Extensive decay, deep but otherwise sound fillings or trauma to a tooth can cause the tooth to die.
The canals of the tooth need to be cleaned to remove infection. This is done by using fine dental files that also shape the canal. At the final appointment the canals are filled and then a filling is placed on top. Generally a root canal treatment will require 2 – 3 appointments. It is recommended that the tooth is crowned 3 months later to strengthen the tooth structure.
